A twentieth-century American author, he is best known for his novel, The Recognitions, which was named one of TIME magazine's 100 best novels from 1923 to 2005. His other notable works include J R and A Frolic of His Own. While a student at Harvard University, he wrote for the Harvard Lampoon.
