A Confederate Army colonel-turned American author, he is famous for his Buffalo Bill series, as well as for his 1872 novel, The Masked Spy. He wrote under numerous pen names, including Dangerfield Burr and Midshipman Tom W. Hall. He studied briefly at the Mobile Medical College before joining the Confederate Army.
