A British children's and young adult author, she is best known for Bend It Like Beckham (2002). Her other critically-acclaimed teen novel, Bang, Bang You're Dead!, was published in 2009. She studied English at Birmingham University. After graduating in 1980, she taught elementary and high school for over a decade and, on the side, published stories in teen magazines.
