A turn-of-the-century American novelist, poet, and short-story writer, he is best known for In The High Hills (poems) and The Interpreter 's House (novel). His other works include The Mullah of Miasmia (play) and They Could Not Sleep (short story collection). After graduating from Princeton University, he moved to Wyoming, where he established and operated two ranches.
